These are descriptions of the
Corrine Gangi Dance Center classes for
September 2009 to June 2010

Ballet
- Pre-Teens: Mon. 6:00-7:00 PM
- Teens and Adults: Fri. 7:30-8:30 PM
This is a one-hour class in fundamental classical ballet.
Students will learn barre and center floor work.
Several ballet steps and combinations will be taught along with some lyrical dance.
The student will begin to acquire knowledge of and appreciation for classical ballet music.
A classical ballet routine will be performed in the recital.
Ballet-Advanced
- Teens: Mon. 7:00-8:00 PM
- Teens and Adults: Mon. 7:00-8:30 PM
These are classical ballet classes for students with some ballet experience.
Emphasis will be on barre and center floor work.
Students will develop coordination, and stretch and strengthen their bodies.
Lyrical dance will also be included. This is a prerequisite for pointe. Students will learn a ballet recital dance.
Pre-Pointe
- Teens: Mon. 8:00-8:30 PM
This is a one-half hour class designed to prepare the student for pointe class.
The student must also register for the preceding one-hour Advanced Teens ballet class.
The class will concentrate on strengthening the leg and calf muscles and feet to ready the student for pointe shoes.
The ballet teacher will decide when the student is ready to move up to pointe class.
Please expect this to take one to three years.
Pointe
- Teens and Adults: Mon. 8:30-9:15 PM
This is a 45 minute beginner to intermediate pointe class.
You must also register for the preceding Advanced Teens/Adults ballet class.
Classes will consist primarily of barre work with some center floor work.
The ballet teacher will decide whether a student is qualified to take this class.
Students will perform a ballet on pointe in the recital.
Lyrical
- Pre-Teens: Tue. 4:30-5:30 PM
- Teens and Adults: Tue. 7:30-8:30 PM
This class is for students who have had some ballet and jazz training.
Lyrical dance tells a story. It is a technical form of ballet with the expression and interpretation of jazz.
It is strongly recommended that jazz and ballet classes be taken in addition to this class.
Students will perform a lyrical dance in the recital.
Ballet and Lyrical
- Ages 9-12: This class is not scheduled this year.
This one-hour class combines fundamental classical ballet with lyrical dance.
Ballet emphasis will be on barre and center floor work. Students will develop coordination, and stretch and strengthen their bodies.
Lyrical dance is a very expressive form of ballet which tells a story.
A classical ballet routine and a lyrical dance will be performed in the recital.
Modern Dance
- Pre-Teens: Mon. 5:00-6:00 PM
- Teens and Adults: Wed. 8:30-9:30 PM
Modern dance uses abstract movements in a dance form that seeks inner and outer awareness through contemporary music.
It's based on a dancer's personal experiences, using her or his body as an instrument to express such emotions as passion, fear, joy, or grief.
The well-known American dancer Isadora Duncan helped create American modern dance, which is often integrated into the choreography of Broadway musicals.
This class follows the styles of modern dance created by Martha Graham and Jose Limon, leading dancers and choreographers of the modern dance movement.
Students will perform a modern dance in the recital.
Ballet and Tap
- Ages 9-12: Wed. 7:00-8:00 PM
In this class, 30 minutes of ballet and 30 minutes of tap are combined.
The ballet portion of this class concentrates on classical ballet including barre and center floor work.
Students will also learn lyrical dance.
Tap will consist of traveling steps, tap turns and combinations done to both traditional and contemporary music.
Students will perform two recital routines, a ballet dance and a tap dance.
Ballet, Tap and Jazz
- Teens: This class is not scheduled this year.
In this hour and a half class, 30 minutes of ballet, 30 minutes of tap
and 30 minutes of jazz are combined. The ballet portion of this
class concentrates on classical ballet including barre and center floor
work. Students will also learn lyrical dance. The tap portion concentrates
on timing, rhythm, traveling steps, tap turns and combinations including
soft shoe, Buffalo and time steps done to both traditional and contemporary
music. Jazz will consist of different styles such as theatrical jazz,
hip-hop and funk.
Students will perform three recital routines: a ballet dance, a tap dance
and a jazz dance.
Ballet and Jazz
- Ages 5-8: Sat. 11:00 AM-12:00 Noon
- Ages 9-12: This class is not scheduled this year.
- Teens: This class is not scheduled this year.
This class combines 30 minutes of ballet and 30 minutes of jazz. The ballet portion of
this class concentrates on classical ballet including barre and center floor work. Students will also learn lyrical dance. Jazz will consist of different styles such as theatrical jazz, hip-hop and funk. Students will perform two recital routines, a ballet dance and a jazz dance.
Ballet and Gymnastics
- Ages 5-8: This class is not scheduled this year.
This class combines 30 minutes of ballet and 30 minutes of gymnastics. Ballet positions, barre, center floor work and ballet terminology is taught at a fun level.
In gymnastics, students will stretch and strengthen their bodies and learn basic gymnastic skills including work on a scaled down balance beam (5 inches off the floor). Students will perform two recital routines, a ballet dance and a gymnastic routine.
DanceXtra --
(Ballet and Tap plus Baton, Gymnastics and Creative Dance)

This class begins with 20 minutes of ballet followed by 20 minutes of tap dancing.
A third dance discipline taught during the last 20 minutes is changed every 10 lessons.
For the first 10 lessons it's baton twirling (Dance Center batons will be used).
The second 10 lessons feature gymnastics. During the third 10 lessons the focus is on jazz dancing including hip-hop. The last 11 lessons concentrate on preparing for the two recital routines: a ballet dance and a tap dance.

- Ages 9-12: This class is not scheduled this year.
This class begins with 20 minutes of tap dancing
(the Pre-Teens wear high heels) followed by 20 minutes of jazz dancing.
A third dance discipline taught during the last 20 minutes is changed every 10 lessons.
For the first 10 lessons it's baton twirling (Dance Center batons will be used).
The second 10 lessons feature gymnastics.
During the third 10 lessons the focus is on ballet dancing.
The last 11 lessons concentrate on preparing for the two recital routines: a tap dance and a jazz dance.
Tap-Teens
- Teens: This class is not scheduled this year.
This class concentrates on basic timing, rhythm and the execution of different kinds of tap steps such as soft shoe, Buffalo, time steps and syncopated tap. Also included will be tap turns and various tap combinations. Students will learn a tap dance which will be performed in the recital.
Tap-Adults
- Adults: This class is not scheduled this year.
This is a class for beginners and intermediates. The students will learn soft shoe, time steps, and tap combinations plus a complete tap routine. Fun rhythmic sessions tone up legs and thighs. Music is from the 30's and 40's up through today's sounds. The tap routine will be performed in the recital.
Tap-Teens & Adults
- Teens and Adults: This class is not scheduled this year.
This is a class for beginners and intermediates.
Concentration will be on basic timing, rhythm and the execution of different kinds of tap steps such as soft shoe, Buffalo, time steps and syncopated tap.
Fun rhythmic sessions tone up legs and thighs and strengthen the ankles and feet.
Music is from the 40's up through today's sounds.
Students will perform a tap routine in the recital.
Tap-Intermediate Teens & Adults
- Teens and Adults: Fri. 7:00-8:00 PM
This one-hour tap class is for the student with prior tap training.
Class includes extensive barre work to strengthen the ankles and feet to prepare for more advanced techniques.
Emphasis will be on learning variations of pullbacks, wings, tap turns, floor work, tap combinations and a capella tap.
Students will perform a tap routine in the recital.
Tap-Advanced Teens
- Teens: Thu. 7:00-8:00 PM
This one-hour class is for the experienced student. The class will concentrate on advanced-level tap techniques including variations with pullbacks and wings, tap turns and advanced tap combinations.
Students will practice extensions for line work (Rockette style) in addition to a cappella dancing.
Students will perform a tap routine in the recital.
Tap-Advanced Adults
- Adults: Thu. 8:00-9:00 PM
This is an excellent tap class for professional-level dancers, teachers and choreographers.
Emphasis will be on advanced-level techniques. Several dance routines will be taught.
Each dance will be in a different style, such as Broadway show, contemporary tap, a cappella tap, clogging, Irish step dancing, and others.
Students who are accepted into this class will be invited to join our dance company DancElectric.
Some teenagers will be accepted, however, an extensive background is required.

Tap and Jazz
- Ages 6-8: Thu. 6:30-7:30 PM
- Ages 9-12: Choose one of these times -- Wed. 5:30-6:30 PM, Fri. 5:30-6:30 PM
- Teens: Wed. 8:00-9:00 PM
- Ages 7-10 (Saturday): This class is not scheduled this year.
These classes combine 30 minutes of tap and 30 minutes of jazz. The tap portion concentrates on timing, rhythm, tap turns and various tap combinations including soft shoe. Jazz will consist of different styles such as theatrical jazz. Students will perform two recital routines: a tap dance and a jazz dance.
Tap and Jazz II
- Ages 11-13: This class is not scheduled this year.
This is a continuation of Tap and Jazz. Consisting of 30 minutes of tap and 30 minutes of jazz, emphasis will be on more advanced techniques.
The tap portion will concentrate on pullbacks, wings, tap turns, and advanced tap combinations.
Jazz will include theatrical jazz and hip-hop. Students will perform two recital routines: a tap dance and a jazz dance.
Tap and Jazz-Advanced
- Pre-Teens: Mon. 5:00-6:00 PM
- Teens: Mon. 6:00-7:00 PM
This class is for experienced students and consists of 30 minutes of tap dancing and 30 minutes of jazz.
The tap portion of this class will concentrate on advanced tap techniques.
Emphasis will be on variations of pullbacks, wings, tap turns and advanced tap combinations.
Jazz will include theatrical jazz, hip-hop and funk.
Students will perform two recital routines, a tap dance and a jazz dance.
Tap, Jazz and Ballet-Advanced
- Ages 9-12: This class is not scheduled this year.
This one-hour class is for the more experienced younger students and will begin to prepare them for higher levels of dance.
It will consist of 30 minutes each of tap and jazz from September to December.
From January until the end of the school year 30 minutes of tap and 30 minutes of ballet will be taught.
Students will perform three recital dances: tap, jazz and ballet.
Tap and Gymnastics
- Ages 5-8: This class is not scheduled this year.
This class combines 30 minutes of tap dancing and 30 minutes of gymnastics.
Tap will consist of barre and center floor work. Concentration will be on timing and learning different rhythmic combinations.
Gymnastics will begin with stretching, strengthening and limbering exercises.
Students will learn basic, intermediate and advanced gymnastic skills on a one-to-one basis with the teacher.
Students will perform two recital routines, a tap dance and a gymnastic routine.
Irish Step Dancing
- Ages 6-8: Tue. 5:00-6:00 PM
- Ages 8-12: Thu. 5:30-6:30 PM
- Teens and Adults: Mon. 8:30-9:30 PM
- Ages 11-13 (Intermediate - 3 years experience): Wed 7:30-8:30 PM
Irish Step dancing emphasizes foot-work similar to tapping and clogging but the style is very different.
This one-hour class consists of 30 minutes of soft shoe and 30 minutes of hard shoe.
The soft shoe portion of the class concentrates on strengthening the muscles of the feet and ankles, stretching the legs for high extensions, and executing turns and combination steps.
Soft shoe gets the dancer warmed up for hard shoe.
The class consists of reel, single jig, double jig, hard reel and slip jig.
These techniques will be taught as the students advance.
Students will perform two recital dances: a soft shoe and a hard shoe.

Irish Step Dancing-Advanced
- Teens and Adults (5 years experience): Fri. 6:30-7:30 PM
This one-hour class consists of 30 minutes of soft shoe and 30 minutes of hard shoe.
The soft shoe portion gets the dancer warmed up for hard shoe which will consist of treble jigs and hornpipe.
The dances will be lively, and complex steps will be incorporated into set dances.
Dances will be performed in triple time and will include team dancing.
Students will perform two recital dances: a soft shoe and a hard shoe.

Jazz
- Teens and Adults: Thu. 7:30-8:30 PM
This is a one-hour jazz class. Students will work on jazz combinations and turns in addition to barre exercises, stretching and center floor work.
Concentration will be on theatrical and contemporary jazz in addition to hip-hop, funk, and others.
Students will perfom a jazz dance in the recital.
Jazz-Advanced Teens
- Teens: Thu. 8:30-9:30 PM
Advanced-level jazz techniques will be covered in this one-hour class for the experienced student.
Theatrical jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, funk, stomp and other jazz styles will be taught at an advanced level.
Students will perform a jazz dance in the recital.
Jazz-Advanced Adults
- Adults: Tue. 8:30-9:30 PM
This is the perfect jazz class for professional-level dancers, teachers and choreographers.
Emphasis will be on the latest advanced-level jazz techniques including partnering.
Several dance routines will be taught.
Each dance will be in a different style of jazz, such as Broadway show, contemporary jazz, funk and others.
Students who are accepted into this class will be invited to join our dance company DancElectric.
Some teenagers will be accepted, however, an extensive background is required.

They will stretch and strengthen their bodies while learning basic, intermediate and advanced gymnastic skills.
This class helps prepare students for cheerleading tryouts.
Students will perform two recital routines, a jazz dance and a gymnastic routine.
Jazz/Hip-Hop, Tap and Gymnastics
- Ages 9-12: This class is not scheduled this year.
Hip-hop style jazz, tap dancing and gymnastics are combined in this class. Each lesson will begin with 15 minutes of hip-hop style jazz dancing followed by 15 minutes of tap dancing.
The last half hour will be devoted to gymnastics.
The jazz and tap steps learned will be combined into a hip-hop jazz and tap routine (Savion Glover style).
In gymnastics, the concentration will be on basic gymnastic skills.
Students will perform two recital routines: a jazz/tap dance and a gymnastic routine.
Hip-Hop
- Ages 5-8: Fri. 4:30-5:30 PM
- Ages 9-12: Choose one of these times -- Tue. 7:00-8:00 PM, Fri. 5:00-6:00 PM
- Teens and Adults: Tue. 8:00-9:00 PM
Take this high-energy class and learn the latest hip-hop and street funk steps. Students will warm-up and learn contemporary techniques and combinations to current pop, hip-hop and R&B music. This is a great class for beginner and intermediate level dancers looking to increase their repertoire on the stage and dance floor alike. Students will perform a hip-hop routine in the recital.
Hip-Hop Advanced
- Teens and Adults: Fri. 8:00-9:00 PM
- Pre-teens: This class is not scheduled this year.
This fast-paced, one-hour class is for the experienced dancer. Advanced-level hip-hop and street funk techniques will be explored through warm-up, floor work and combinations, all set to a soundtrack of pop, hip-hop and R&B music. Students will perform a hip-hop routine in the recital.
Boys Hip-Hop
- Boys all ages: Tue. 4:00-5:00 PM
- Male Teens and Adults: This class is not scheduled this year.
Take this high-energy class and learn the latest hip-hop and street funk steps. Students will warm-up and learn contemporary techniques and combinations to current pop, hip-hop and R&B music. This is a great class for beginner and intermediate level dancers. Students will perform a hip-hop routine in the recital.
Mom & Tot
- Ages 1½ - 2½: Choose one of these times -- Mon. 9:30-10:15 AM, Sat. 9:00-9:45 AM
Have fun with your toddler! Learn to work with your child to help develop her or his coordination and agility.
This class is an introduction to dance with emphasis on gross motor skills.
Pre-ballet, creative dance, baton and more will be covered.
You will also guide your child through basic gymnastic mat exercises including a scaled-down balance beam (5 inches off the floor). You will work with your child at all times and have as much fun as she or he will.
Moms (and dads) and tots will be invited to demonstrate, in our recital, what they have accomplished.
DancExtracise
- Adults: Mon. 10:30-11:30 AM, Tue. 10:00-11:00 AM, Sat. 10:00-11:00 AM
Body conditioning for adults dancing to energizing Latin music. This class focuses on muscle flexibility, strength and tone, starting with floor work such as Pilates and basic Yoga exercises. Some prop (elastic bands) and barre work is followed by dance movement and steps to Latin music (salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, etc). This class is great for someone who wants to get into shape, learn new and fun ways to move and not have to attend an aerobics class! Pay as you go, only $10 per one-hour class.
Cheerleading
- Ages 6-9: This class is not scheduled this year.
- Ages 10-12: This class is not scheduled this year.
This is a one hour cheerleading class.
Students will learn cheer dance jazz combinations with pom poms.
Concentration will be on jazz dance with barre work and center floor work, learning how to perform high kicks and turns.
Special attention will be given to safety and the proper way to stretch.
Basic cheerleading stunts will be taught, such as cartwheels. splits, jumps and leaps.
Students will perform a cheer dance routine in the recital.
Gymnastics
- All ages: This class is not scheduled this year.
In this one-hour gymnastic class, students will work on basic, intermediate and advanced skills on a one-to-one basis with the teacher.
Sessions always begin with stretching, strengthening and limbering exercises.
The learning of difficult gymnastic skills for each student will depend on that student's ability. This class helps prepare for cheerleading tryouts.
Students will perform a gymnastic routine in the recital.
Boys Gymnastics
- All ages: This class is not scheduled this year.
Gymnastic training for young boys helps develop athletic ability for sports. This is an excellent class to help build body strength and develop discipline.
Students will work on stretching, strengthening and limbering exercises with emphasis on mat work.
They will learn basic, intermediate and advanced gymnastic skills working on a one-to-one basis with the teacher.
Students will perform a gymnastic routine in the recital.
Baton Twirling-PreSchool
- Ages 3-5: This class is not scheduled this year.
In this one-hour class, students will learn the basics of baton twirling taught at the pre-school level.
Concentration will be on coordination, finger control and marching.
The class will be taught a dance twirl stage routine which will be performed in the recital.
Baton Twirling-Children
- Children: This class is not scheduled this year.
In this one-hour class, students will learn beginner and intermediate level baton twirling techniques.
Some twirls will be learned as a group. More advanced twirls will be taught on a one-to-one basis with the teacher depending on the ability of each student.
The class will be taught a dance twirl stage routine which will be performed in the recital.
Baton Twirling-Teens & Adults
- Teens and Adults: This class is not scheduled this year.
This is a one-hour class for the experienced baton twirling student. Emphasis will be on advanced level techniques including twirling with two batons and a hoop baton.
The class will be taught a dance twirl stage routine which will be performed in the recital.
Clogging
- Teens and Adults: This class is not scheduled this year.
A renewed interest in clogging, which began as a folk dance in the Appalachian Mountains many years ago, is bringing students to our Dance Center to learn to clog.
Concentration will be on traditional style clogging combinations to country-western music in addition to a "new" approach - clogging to contemporary music!
Students will perform a clogging routine in the recital.
Theatre Dance
- All Ages: This class is not scheduled this year.
This is an excellent class for aspiring actors and actresses. Students will learn dance steps and combinations to prepare them for auditions and performing in area productions of Broadway musicals. This one-hour class will consist of 20 minutes of jazz, 20 minutes of tap and 20 minutes of ballet. The level and style of dance will be specifically designed for students with little or no previous dance training. If you want to pass an audition for that new production with an area or school drama group or get a better spot in the dance numbers this is the class for you!
Adult Dance Exercise
- Adults: This class is not scheduled this year.
Each lesson in this one hour easy going dance exercise class will consist of jazz, ballet and combination steps that are easy and fun (after an adequate warm up, of course). There will be barre and center floor work and a simple jazz routine will be learned. The lesson ends with stretching. This is a feel good class. After a long day with the kids or at work this hour of dance exercise in an air conditioned studio will help you relieve stress.
